Have you ever lost something that you spend hours looking for but can’t seem to find it anywhere, and it drives you crazy? I can’t tell you how many times I have lost or misplaced my keys, phone, wallet, or purse. It happens more than I would like to admit. Shoot, I have even lost my car in parking lots! How can you lose a car? Or there’s my least favorite scenario: have you ever had your luggage lost at the airport, and you have to sit and wait for hours or even days, hoping they can track down your bag and return it to you? It’s the worst!

One time on The Bachelor, our luggage got lost. We had just arrived at the airport in Costa Rica super late at night only to find out that none of our bags had made it. It was beyond frustrating; we were tired and exhausted. You know those people who are smart packers? The prepared travelers? The people who pack their toiletries, undergarments, and an extra pair of clothes in their carry-on just in case? Yeah, that’s not me. The airline told us it could take a couple of days for the bags to make it out to us since the resort we were staying at was in the middle of nowhere, over two hours from the airport. We all climbed aboard our bus with nothing in our hands and rode off to our resort. Having no toothbrushes, makeup, hairbrushes, or clean clothes—all while being filmed on national television for millions to see—we had quite an interesting time. So for two days we kicked it in our travel clothes until our bags finally arrived.

If you’ve ever traveled and had to deal with recovering a piece of lost luggage, you know how frustrating the process can be. But if losing your clothes for your trip is a pain, imagine how frustrating—or even scary—losing your identity can be. Maybe you’ve misplaced who you are for long enough that you’re wandering around, just waiting for some suitcase full of yourself to show up in the jungle. But here’s a secret: you don’t have to depend on someone else to deliver your worth to your door. Your identity—who you are at your very core—comes from God. And when you know that your identity is not dependent on who everyone else is telling you to be, it can’t ever be lost or stolen from you.

Not everyone will value your gifts, passions, heart, and dreams. They won’t see your worth. But if you value you, if you know who you are, what others do or don’t do, say or don’t say, doesn’t matter. Knowing who we are deep down is easier said than done. So how can we find hope when we are constantly being pushed an identity-altering narrative for our lives?
